From 8–10 september 2024, the annual joint seminar of the Universities of Vienna and Kyoto on the topic of "Labour Law and Social Law Aspects of Demographic Change" took place in Japan under the direction of Wolfgang Mazal. Sonja Dörfler-Bolt gave a lecture on "Parental Labour in Austria and Sweden. (De-)Genderisation in Care and leave Policies between 1990 and 2023" and Lorenz Wurm on "Birth Rate and Family Benefits".

Conference: Classes, classifications and classifying
Classifying into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ parents
The conference of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS), which took place from 23–25 September 2024 in Osnabrück (D), focused on the ambiguities of the terms classes, classifications and classifiying. Different terms, theoretical perspectives or starting points and empirical approaches were discussed, which are associated with these terms in sociology and other disciplines or which form the sociological object.
Together with Fabienne Décieux and Ulrike Zartler, Eva-Maria Schmidt spoke on the panel "‘Evaluating parenthood - categorising 'good' and 'bad' parents' on the topic "What makes a good mother? Social norms and collective strategies around good motherhood".

Cooperation with Turkish University
As part of the COST Action, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ruveyde AYDIN from Ondokuz Mayıs University in Samsum, Türkiye completed a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at the ÖIF from 1 to 5 July 2024 and worked with Dr. Eva-Maria Schmidt on an article on the professional re-entry of Turkish mothers after their 16-week maternity leave (analık izni), see also Country Report Türkiye.

The 21st Annual Seminar of the International Network on Leave Policies & Research (ILNPR) took place from 17 to 18 June as a hybrid event in Montréal (Québec, Canada) at the Université Téluq. In the sessions, various international comparisons of parental leave and pension schemes were presented and methodological and conceptual issues were discussed. Eva-Maria Schmidt from the ÖIF took part.

On 21 June 2024, a working group meeting "Terminology" took place at the ÖIF in Vienna as part of the Cost Action "Parental Leave Social Sustainability". Sonja Dörfler-Bolt presented a draft on the terminology of Paid Parental Leave in international organisations.

Labour Law, Work Organisation and Birth Rate
Businesspeople and administrative officials from the South Korean province of Gyeonggi-do visited the University of Vienna on 26 April 2024. Wolfgang Mazal gave a lecture on Austrian labour and social law with a focus on labour organisation issues. In South Korea, the maximum average working time over several months is 51 hours per week and holiday entitlement is two weeks per year. This probably also contributes to the fact that South Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the world (0.72 children per woman aged 15 to 49).

Under the title "Shared parental leave and family care, in good times and in challenging times?", the experts Sonja Dörfler-Bolt (ÖIF), Gerlinde Mauerer (Institute of Sociology), Nadav Perez-Vaisvidovsky (Ashkelon Academic College), Barbara Schrammel (Frauen* beraten Frauen*) and Olena Strelnyk (TU Munich) presented and discussed opportunities and challenges in shared parental leave as well as family and gender policy issues in Vienna.
To the review
